3Good...but could be a lot better  Nov 02, 2004 By Terry M. Thompson "thompsot8"
The motor/shredder unit (the heaviest part of the machine) is tongue mounted and moves considerably side-to-side as the terrain changes, causing the discharge elbow to get out of alignment with the opening in the leaf cart. This causes the connecting boot to wear out almost immediately. In addition, the tilt/dump feature is worthless since debris still has to be raked out.

This could be a great machine if the manufacturer would simply beef up the framing, tie the motor and cart to that framing, and eliminate the dumping feature. The philosophy is great, but the design is lacking...be prepared to re-build it yourself if satisfaction is the goal.

1Good idea poorly implemented  Nov 08, 2009 By Flybob
I had the Agri-Fab chip-n-vac (mow-n-vac plus a shredder theoretically capable of limbs up to 2" diameter). My mother has over 300 deciduous trees AND a dislike for ANY leaves lying on the ground (bad combination). So I installed this unit on her rider mower. The trailer itself seemed fairly well built. Emptying it was no real problem. It had a good capacity, any more and her 18HP hydrostatic mower would not be able to pull it.

HOWEVER, the problem is this: even though anything going through the hose has already passed through a running lawnmower deck, the hose is narrow enough that tiny little twigs (6-8" long and < 0.1" diameter) can just bridge the inside of the hose from one side to the other where it connects to the motor/fan housing. This is compounded by the fact that the hose is larger diameter than the fan intake, causing a little ledge for the twigs to catch on. Once this happens, you are finished. The leaves will very quickly back up behind the twig and clog the hose. Then you have to shut down the whole system and spend 15 minutes unplugging it. And bear in mind this is a unit with a chipper which is supposedly capable of eating most of a wooden baseball bat, brought to its knees by the wood equivalent of a Q-Tip.

The vac would clog approximately every 10 minutes, probably 6 times per load. This turned a 2-hour job into an 8-hour job, not what I had in mind when I bought a labor-saving device.

I complained to Agri-Fab, pointing out this flaw. Rather than admit their error, they said that I should pick up all the twigs before vacuuming leaves...? Not sure how that would be feasible since twigs are much denser than leaves and therefore work their way underneath the leaves? Not to mention pretty much every leaf is connected to a twig at some point in its life. This means I would have to pick up all my leaves, separate them from the twigs somehow, then take away the twigs, and put the leaves back down for the Agri Fab to pick up? I didnt even finish the job, rather I returned the unit the next day and got my money back.

My recommendation is, if you want a powered leaf vac; instead of this, get a "Cyclone Rake". It is not my favorite design, because it has a semi-rigid attachment to the tractor with free-castering wheels rather than an actual trailer. This means you have to be careful to not swat trees and fences when you turn, kind of like a bushhog on a 3-pt hitch. However, it more than makes up for it in the fact that a) the hose is ~50% larger diameter so it moves more leaves, b) has no entry-point narrows at the fan and c) since it is rigidly attached the hose does not have to flex in turns and can be much shorter. The materials are very sturdy and in two partial seasons (probably 25 full loads of leaves) I have not had 1 single jam in the system, even when wet! And it picks up amazingly well, almost 100%. Furthermore with its canvas sides it collapses to a very small footprint for storage, so if space is at a premium for you, it can be hung from a wall. The pieces are all solid and seem very well designed for long-term maintenance. In my only contact with customer service so far I had a buckle break and they sent a replacement piece at no charge with no hassle. it even comes with a little pouch of tools to assemble it with and very detailed instruction notebook for installation, maintenance and winterizing. Cyclone Rake ftw!

4mow - vac  Oct 12, 2005 By Grand Bay Bob "Bob"
I have had really great success with the mow - n - vac. BUT, like others, I find fault with the tongue and it's tendency to tilt due to the weight. Also the boot around the discharge to the cart wore out in less than 2 years!
The molded plastic housing coming up from the impeller wore through in the 1st year!
The inboard top corner on the deck attaching box has wore through from the insde, indicating it is not thick enough.
There should be a swivel on the discharge tube, incorporated with a self unloader p/u.

2Cheap plastic parts  Nov 10, 2009 By Picky Buyer
I had the same problem as another reviewer whose discharge elbow gets out of alignment with the opening in the hopper, causing the boot to wear out quickly. A replacement boot is about $20, but to make matters worse, it's attached with 3/16" rivets, which are difficult to remove (drill out) and reattach (must buy new rivets). Simple nuts, bolts, and washers would be a better design. Also, my discharge elbow cracked at the bottom on one side, where 2 bolts attach it to the blower discharge. A new discharge elbow costs $94.92, which is ridiculous. Customer service was no help whatsoever when I emailed them about the problem to ask what type of plastic is used, thinking I might try to use epoxy.

5No brainer  Nov 19, 2009 By R. English "Rob English"
While others have complained that the plastic chute to cart connection point is a problem, in the five years that I have owned this product I have not had any problems with this happening.

On a 1 to 5 I rated this product a five. It changed my world so significantly that if this one were to "die" I would buy another one the next day. I have a large property that I use a combination of equipment to maintain; tractor and 6' grooming deck, lawn tractor with Mow-n-Vac, hand mower, etc. I use the Mow-n-Vac. I am no stranger to maintaining equipment and this product has required some replacement parts which were easily found on the web and ordered. I accidentally sucked up a rock about the size of a canelop which broke an ear off the impeller which I replaced, and I have replaced the cuff connection at the cart to chute which was indeed riveted, did require me to drill out the rivets which is no big deal and took less time to drill out than the same number of bolts would have required to remove - so that is not an issue as far as I am concerned. That cuff, like the impeller and hose is a consumable part that I think has an appropriate lifespan and given the fact that I use this cart vac every time I mow, it has performed exceedingly well.

I did not use the "universal" boot that came with it for the mower deck connection. I had a bagger on my 42" Sears lawn tractor and I simply used the factory boot that is custom moulded to fit that deck and connected the hose for the Mow-n-Vac to that boot. I recommend that anyone buying this item order the factory bagger deck boot for your mower from the manufacturer rather than trying to cut and fashion the universal one that comes with it. The fit is perfect and it provides tremendous suction.

Advantages of this system that may not be initially appreciated are that the suction is very strong, so it sucks the grass up straight in the air when the mower deck passes over it and allows the blades to effect a nice clean tabletop cut on the grass. Also, you can run your ground speed faster than you can with a bagger because now it is much less prone to clogging with heavy grass since the grass and leaves are pulled out of the mower deck by the vacuum instead of being pushed up the chute by blade windpower. This is a significant advantage. Another advantage is that the impeller, along with the mower blades, chops up fall leaves and reduces the volume by 200% or more. This helps in leaf management in the fall and the Mow-n-Vac also made my rake essentially osolete except for in and around shrubs where the mower can't reach.

I think this is a very good product, I am very pleased with the durability, and it is worth the cost all day long as far as I'm concerned. I own a pool and I haven't had cut grass or any "yard debris" in my pool since buying this product. It is like vacuuming your house; it vacuums the yard clean as a whistle.

I want to comment on the only complaints I read above and point out that this is not really a good item to buy for people who live on steep slopes. When fully loaded with cut grass, this cart is heavy. Due to the high and narrow design, which is very well thought out to match the width of the average lawn tractor, it can be top-heavy when full making it pront to a potential roll-over on a side slope, and, also straining tractors with automatic/hydrostatic drive transmissions. Just use your common sense when operating it, but don't think you'll safely pull this cart behind your lawn tractor on a steep slope when it's full because it will weigh hundreds of pounds with a high center of gravity.

The triangular trailer design, two wheels and tongue, do allow the motor and chute to twist on slopes because the 4" engine mount on the frame rail is so narrow that it can't possibly prevent some movement on the chute which is nearly 5' above it. So expect it to shift around a little on slopes but not so much as to pop out of the boot ever for me. The only way you could change this would be to add a front steering axle which I think would be total overkill. Again, in over five years of ownership this has not been an issue for me.

The engine is easy to maintain, fuel, check and change oil. The cart is very durable and I couldn't be any more pleased with this item.
