Super Shorts for Work or Play Oct 13, 2011
By M. Ross
"Bacchuskitty"
These are fantastic shorts. Much of what makes the excellent Ranger pants great is transferred to the shorts version. Some of my experience with my Riggs Ranger shorts:
* Durability: These shorts are made from ripstop cotton material that proves its stuff against wear and abrasion. In addition to being very long lasting, they also continue to look great as they age.
* Comfort: These are really, really comfortable shorts, at least to this reviewer. Though tough, the fabric is not terribly heavy or overly stiff. There's plenty of room in the crotch area which is greatly appreciated; when using these on the job, the comfort of these shorts and lack of binding in certain areas makes them a pleasure to wear all day long.
* Utility: These pants come with a hammer loop on the right side, which is nice, though I find it to be on the smaller side. Wrangler: Please make sure you test your hammer loop with a proper framing hammer! I found that most of my larger hammers, with their slight flare at the end of the handle, will catch annoyingly as it's being pulled out. But proper work is done with a good tool belt, so no biggie there... Also on the right are two other smaller pockets for smaller tools: One is decent for a box cutter, or small wrench, etc., and the other is good for... a small mobile phone. That second one is pretty shallow and I've even had my mobile phone bounce out of there when I've taken a hop or two to avoid some hazard. What I DO like, however, are the two large cargo pockets on either side. I don't think these are quite well suited for work shorts, but they are very well suited for other active pursuits like hiking. For work, I find a tool belt works better for utility than the pockets of these shorts. Here, I think Carhartt does a better job designing their pockets to accept tools.
* Style: These are great looking shorts. I'm just as happy wearing these on the weekend as on the job site during the week. They are as smart looking as their full-length counterparts and serve just as well as leisure wear as work wear.
* Value: Like most shorts, they go for less than their related pants. They represent a good deal, even though the market for shorts like this is a lot more crowded than for the Ranger pants, in my opinion. Still, the price is about right and the value is good considering these will last you longer than about any other shorts you can buy.
Other thoughts:
As mentioned, These shorts are definitely tough enough for the job site even if the pockets aren't as utility-oriented as equivalent Carhartt shorts. A brief word on Carhartt work wear: The pockets strike me as being designed by someone who actually uses them for work and considers how big and deep they need to be, how easy to put something in/take something out, etc. For this reviewer, I find using a tool belt much more practical than relying on the pockets of these shorts. Even so, their durability, comfort, and style more than make up the difference. Indeed, these are the most comfortable, practical shorts I've ever owned and use them both for work and play.
A word about sizing: As with other garments, trying them on before committing is essential. The waist of my Riggs Ranger shorts felt just a tad on the small side compared to equivalent pants of the same measurement. Shrinkage has proven to be very well controlled, however, and the shorts wear just as well now as when new.
In a crowded field, these shorts should stand up to comparison with any other. Looking for shorts tough enough to stand up to work but work just as well at the BBQ, camping, or at the beach? You would do well to give these serious consideration.
Best shorts ever Jan 31, 2012
By S. R. Horrocks These are my go to shorts now. I like the cut, fit and material. Plenty of deep pockets and they wear like iron. They ride right at my knee cap and are very comfortable.
Rugged yet good looking Aug 19, 2011
By Jeanette Parsons My husband absolutely loves the Riggs brand of shorts and long pants. They are well-made and stand up to a hard working man's day. They are sometimes difficult to find, but I always find what I want on Amazon.

These are my favorite shorts. I have a couple pairs and they're indestructable. The denim has a ripstop weave & is noticeably heavier than other shorts. They are cut long enough to avoid that 'Reno 911' look. Great pockets and overall nice fit.
A Good set of Rough and tumbe cargo shorts Jun 06, 2011
By Charles K. Orr Riggs makes rugged work clothes of very good materials. The stitching which is sometimes an issue with the off shore distributors is surprisingly is considerably better than the pair of Ranger pants I bought earlier this year. It should be noted, however, that unlike the ranger pants these shorts are sized correctly and do not have the so-called "vanity inch" that the include with the ranger pants. If you fit into a pair of Ranger Pants snugly I would consider purchasing a size larger for reasons of personal comfort.
The slimmer cut may be a production issue or it may be a style concern. I'm going to use these new shorts as an impetus to shed a few unwanted pounds.
